How To Tell If They Are Lying Online

By Merrill On January 7, 2010 Under Dating Tips, Featured Article

So you just met this amazing guy online, but it sounds too good to be true.  You find yourself wondering if he is actually the person he says he is.  You decide to just wait it out, only to find out that two months later when you meet in person that he has been lying about who he is this whole time.

Online dating is difficult because you do not have the same capabilities as you do in a person on person relationship.  You have to trust this person more then you would at the beginning of any other relationship.  This is simply because you have no other choice.

So what do you do?  How can you tell if this guy is for real or just telling you what you want to hear.  Here we will offer you a few hints on how to figure out if he is just too good to be true.

First, trust your instincts.  I mean that is why we have them right.  Usually they are right so you should at least acknowledge them and give your instincts the benefit of the doubt.  Scientifically speaking the idea of instincts is very real.  There is proof that our brain have the ability to send us preemptive warning when something just does not sit well.  It is not completely unexplainable, I mean your brain has so much experience that it uses these experiences to ‘predict’ future events.  You are not psychic, rather you have a precedent, and when thins do not flow as they once did, your brain alerts you with a instinct’.

Second, if it sounds to good to be true then it probably is.  I mean come on, if you have gone twenty years without finding prince charming then why would he suddenly email you?  There are a lot of stupid people online, but there are also alot of really great people too.  Do not let a few bad eggs ruin your whole experience rather just be careful, and keep your guard up.  Love can make us blind to the many bad things that are going on, so as long as you keep in mind that something may go wrong you will be fine.  You should have the ability to tell if someone is telling you solely what you want to hear, or if they truly feel that way.  If your guy friend online keeps telling you that he wants to marry you, but says he cannot afford to come see you then, you need to be able to decipher if he is using you for the money, or if he wants to actually marry you.  Well, if he wants to marry you without even meeting you, that would be strange to me.

This one might be obvious, but I still have to mention it.  If you catch him in a lie, it is likely that he is lying about other things too.  So picture this, you are talking online, and he says I have a soccer game I have to get to.  Well when you first started talking he said he hated soccer.  It is up to you whether you want to bust him on the lie, but chances are he is going to try and convince you that you were wrong,a nd make you second guess yourself.  So maybe don’t bother with it, and either ditch him, or proceed with caution.

Finally, try not to fall head over heels in love with the guy until you have had a chance to meet and date face to face.  That way you will not have nay regrets, or set yourself up to have your heart broken.  Sometimes book covers are better then the book, but should ever be judged.  So wait it out, and try to control your feelings.

So there you have it.  Now you can tell if that special person online is telling you the truth.  Turn on your super sleuthness, and get online.
